Don’t Invite Your Plumber Over for Thanksgiving

The turkey is in the oven slowly roasting, your out-of-town guests are chatting in the living room and your family and friends are slowly trickling in with freshly baked goods when suddenly, the doorbell rings.  Who could it be? Your neighbor perhaps?  Nope! It’s your plumber! “Okay, who invited the plumber?” you ask.  Well, since your plumbing system is taking on an extra heavy load, he thought he would save you some time and trouble and simply be on standby at your home when the inevitable plumbing issue arises.

There is no use fighting it. It’s more likely than not you’ll experience some form of plumbing problem during this busy holiday season.  In fact, every year we see emergency plumbing issues spike during this busy Thanksgiving holiday.  The fact of the matter is that your drains can only take so much from your kitchen sink and let’s not forget your restrooms either!  Your plumbing system will be working overtime and if your pipes are old, have buildup and are not in tip-top shape, then you better make some room at the dinner table and keep your plumber handy!

Want to avoid a visit from one of your local plumber during your holiday feast?  Here are a few suggestions:

Avoid tossing scraps and food particles down your drain.

In the midst of all the pealing, chopping and straining over or next your kitchen sink there is bound to be some food scraps that will make there way down your drain. Try to keep this to a minimum or simply avoid it all together by doing all of your prep work away from the sink.  All those scraps can potentially to get stuck somewhere down the line and cause a back-up.

Make sure to continuously run cold water as the garbage disposal is running.

This will help the breakdown of food and make any fats and oils solidify which will help the blades cut grease into small pieces.

Give your shower a break.

Ask your guests to leave a 10 to 15 minute gap in between showers.  This will allow the flow of water to run smoothly without overwhelming your plumbing system.

Avoid using “disposable” wipes.

With additional guests staying in your home the risk of a clogged toilet increases dramatically and even more so when guests use “disposable” cleansing wipes.  No matter what the packaging says, those “disposable” cleansing wipes will not break down like regular toilet paper.  In fact, tests have proven that they do not dissolve at all which may lead to major sewer backup.

Overall, the best advice we can give to avoid a major plumbing disaster during your Thanksgiving holiday weekend is to prepare ahead of time.  If you know you’ve been experiencing some problems recently and have to not had these problems diagnosed or repaired, call your local plumber get your problems solved before your big feast!

Beware of Pumpkin Seeds and Guts!

pumpkin_seeds_ Daniel_Cordova_Plumbing

It’s sticky, gooey, and can make chills run down your spine!! No, I’m not talking about Slimer from the movie Ghostbusters,  I’m talking about all those pumpkin seeds and pumpkin guts you’re about to throw down your drain! Ahhh!!!! As the Halloween season rolls around pumpkin carving becomes a very popular family activity in households throughout America.  However, did you know that pumpkin seeds and pumpkin goo can actually cause major havoc in your plumbing system? All those sticky seeds and gooey inner grinds become hard like cement when dry and will stick to your pipes causing scary backups in the future.  Instead, we advise collecting the seeds and setting them outside for the birds or even roasting them for a healthy tasty treat and throw the other pumpkin remains in the trash.  Either way, never toss your pumpkin seeds and guts down the drain, the garbage disposal, or even down the toilet!  Otherwise, that plumbing bill might just make you scream in horror!!!

Sure, there are hundreds of step-by-step video tutorials for that.  Want to diagnose that nagging cough that just won’t go away?  A simple search result from Dr. Google will have you back on your feet in no time!

Online tutorials, blogs, videos, and home improvement shows have given us the confidence to take that adventurous step into the unknown and fix little problems around the house ourselves.  For many homeowners, when things turn out right, this is a huge financial saving and it is extremely satisfying to see the fruits of their labor.  On the other hand, however, when things go wrong, they tend to go terribly wrong and the homeowner ends up with an even larger bill in the end.  So let us tell you this when it comes to your home plumbing system, there are definitely some minor tasks that you can DIY without a problem, but there are other things that should ONLY be left to an expert plumbing technician.  Here are a few:

1. Water Heater Installation: Although it may seem easy to do for some homeowners, water heater installation can be a bit more complex than you may think.  There are codes that must be met to ensure proper installation and avoid future problems like costly water leaks, gas leaks (if using a gas unit), and even major malfunctions. In addition, did you know that for some manufacturers, if your water heater is not installed by a licensed professional you may be voiding the warranty that comes with the unit?  It’s true!  So let’s leave this one to a licensed expert.

2. Gas Line Work: Installing or repairing a gas line or even dealing with a gas line leak is extremely complicated and highly dangerous work.  Certified plumbing technicians are properly trained and have the necessary tools needed to solve sensitive gas line plumbing issues in a safe and efficient manner. Attempting to DIY when it comes to gas line issues can be a serious threat not only to you and your family and your home, but it can also seriously affect your neighbors, or even your entire block if a gas explosion were to occur.  Therefore, this type of job should never be performed or attempted by anyone other than an expert plumber who is licensed and trained for your safety and protection.

3. Tub Fixture Installation: With the right tools, replacing a sink faucet can be a breeze, if you’re handy at that sort of thing, but installing a tub fixture is a bit more complicated and takes a lot more elbow grease and know-how to get the job done right.  In this case, the water shut-off valve is not readily accessible like the ones located under the sink or next to the toilet. For a tub fixture replacement, the wall needs to be opened up in order to access the shut-off valve.  This can be pretty tricky if your shower walls are nicely tiled.  There are various tricks and techniques that licensed and experienced plumbers are trained to perform to get the job done right and leave you with a nice finished look. If this is not done correctly, you may end up with a poor re-tile job, a continuous leak, or even worse, mold inside your walls!  So once again, leave this to a professional!

Overall the best advice we can give is to know your limits. If something seems complicated or a bit out of reach it is best to leave it to the experts at Daniel Cordova Plumbing, Drain & Sewer.  Trying to fix a complicated plumbing issue yourself will not only be time-consuming, but it may cause a larger problem later down the road which can potentially end up costing you a lot more in the end.
